About this course
How this course was made
Section titled “How this course was made”Pure Silver was compiled by RunBook Academy using local large language models, as a practical experiment in what that infrastructure can produce. It is not the work of a photographic chemist writing from experience, and it does not claim to be.
The models ran on a small on-premises cluster:

The content was generated end to end against this local infrastructure. No proprietary cloud API was used to produce the material on this site. The chemistry itself is not the models’ invention: every formula, hazard statement, date and process description was written against a named published source, cited on the page with the date it was read, and the course’s first rule is that where a source could not be found it says so rather than filling the gap.
What the course teaches
Section titled “What the course teaches”Pure Silver is a course in the chemistry, craft and science of traditional photography, and a reference to keep afterwards. Its premise is that the processes of silver-based and historical photography can be understood at the level of light, silver, molecules and materials, and that a photographer who understands them at that level makes better decisions in the darkroom and, in the end, better photographs. It is written for people who love the medium and may have no chemistry beyond school, no electronics and no woodworking, and it teaches what it needs from first principles.

The course is organised into numbered parts across four levels, with a capstone portfolio at the end, and a reference section that stands on its own: the Formulary, the chemical encyclopaedia, the glossary, the process atlas, the troubleshooting atlas, the safety library and the laboratory planner. The curriculum page lists every page.
The standard
Section titled “The standard”The course’s first rule is that it never invents chemistry. Every formula, hazard statement, historical date and process description is checked against a named source on a stated date, the source is cited on the page and in the sources index, and where something could not be verified the course says so. Its second rule is that it never optimises for size: a page exists because the subject needs it, and a page that could not carry genuine educational weight was merged or cut. Its third is that safety overrides historical authenticity: every practical page is classified, and processes whose original practice depended on mercury, cyanide, uranium or chromium(VI) are taught for their chemistry and history and given no home procedure.
Verified content
Section titled “Verified content”Content is checked at build time and before release by a set of automated audits: every page matches the curriculum manifest; every citation key resolves; every chemical id referenced by a formula or a lesson has an encyclopaedia page; every lab carries the required template sections and a safety level; glossary cross-references resolve; filler markers and empty headings fail the build; repeated paragraphs across pages are flagged; unhedged safety language is flagged; and every internal link resolves. The checks are listed in the repository’s README and run in continuous integration. They catch structure, not truth: the chemistry, safety and historical audits that check truth are described in the repository’s contribution guide, and corrections are welcome.

Section titled “Open source”The website code is released under the MIT licence and the course content under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0. Both are in the repository, together with the contribution guide, the authoring guide that every page follows, the security policy and the deployment kit. The site is fully static, loads nothing from third parties, and can be hosted anywhere.

Section titled “Trademarks and independence”Kodak, Ilford, Foma and the other product and company names that appear in the course are the trademarks of their owners. Their published technical documents are cited because they are among the best sources available; the course is an independent educational work, not affiliated with or endorsed by any of them.
