Overview: What a Developer Is

Kodak’s D-76 is four substances in a litre of water: two grams of metol, a hundred grams of sodium sulfite, five grams of hydroquinone, two grams of borax. It has been the reference developer of black-and-white photography for a century, and there is nothing in it you could not buy in an afternoon.

Every property of the negative it makes — how much shadow detail survives, how coarse the grain looks at ten diameters, how steeply density climbs with exposure, how sharp an edge appears — is a consequence of those four numbers and of what each substance is. This part is about why, ingredient by ingredient and mechanism by mechanism.

Part IV established the single sentence this part elaborates: a developer is an electron donor whose potential is sufficient to reduce silver ions at a silver speck, but insufficient to reduce them, in any reasonable time, on a bare crystal. Kodak’s own 1928 primer states the design constraint from the other direction — a developing agent’s affinity for oxygen must sit within narrow bounds, strong enough to reduce the exposed silver salt and at the same time not to affect what has not been exposed.

Everything in a developer bottle other than the agent exists because that constraint is fragile. The agent will not work without alkali. It will not survive contact with air without a preservative. It will not stay selective as the film releases bromide into it. Reading a formula is reading a set of answers to those three problems, and the eleven lessons here take them one at a time.

Kodak's 1928 primer lists four ingredients. The fifth box is drawn dashed because it is the third and least obvious job of the third ingredient, and because it is where most of the surprises in this part come from.

The primer’s list is developing agent, alkali, preservative, restrainer, and it is still the right list. What it does not say is that the preservative has a second career. At the hundred grams per litre D-76 carries, sulfite is also a solvent for silver bromide, and that fact alone accounts for D-76’s fine grain, part of its speed behaviour, and the difference between using it at full strength and at 1+1. D-23 is metol and sulfite and nothing else: 7.5 g of metol in 100 g of sodium sulfite per litre, with no alkali added at all beyond what the sulfite itself supplies. It is the simplest working developer in the literature and the cleanest possible demonstration that an agent, a preservative and the mild alkalinity of the preservative are enough to make a picture.

D-76 adds the second agent and a buffered alkali. Mixing both, measuring the pH of each against the published figures, and processing one control roll in each is how this part ends — and those two rolls become the baseline that Part IX measures every subsequent variation against. A developer you mixed yourself, whose pH you recorded, is a control. A bottle of something proprietary is not.
