Assignment: The Exhibition Print and Its Critique
Two prints and a page of writing. The first print is the one this whole part has been building towards: one negative, anchored, filtered, worked on locally, developed to a fixed time, washed, dried, flattened, spotted and mounted. The second is the same print made again from the printing map alone, without looking at the first. The page of writing judges both, by a method, in a fixed order, under a light whose level you measured and wrote down.
The pair is the point. A single good print proves that you can make a good print once. Two prints that agree prove that the map is an instruction rather than a souvenir, and the size and direction of their disagreement is the most useful measurement in this part.
The intention
Section titled “The intention”Produce, in two sittings of about two hours:
- One finished exhibition print, mounted, from a negative you have already read, anchored and interpreted on the four pages before this one.
- One second copy, made from the map alone, on paper from the same box.
- One written critique covering both, in three passes — technical, structural, intention — with the passes taken in that order and none of them skipped because the print is pleasing.
Nothing here introduces a new chemical, a new technique or a new number. Every operation belongs to a page you have already worked through, and this page links them rather than repeating them. What is new is the judgement, and judgement is the part of printing most often left to mood.
Learning objectives
Section titled “Learning objectives”By the end of this assignment you should be able to:
- Apply a fixed three-pass critique method to a print, in an order you can defend, and produce a written judgement whose every claim names the thing on the paper that supports it.
- Distinguish a fault from a preference, and say which of the two any given remark is.
- State the conditions a print was judged under — illuminance, the light’s colour, the surround, the distance — and explain why a judgement made without them cannot be compared with anybody else’s.
- Make a print a second time from a written map, measure the disagreement between the two copies in stops, and attribute it to the map, the paper or the session using the records rather than memory.
- Critique work that is not yours, from a set of reproductions you assembled and whose rights you recorded, before turning the method on your own.
- Receive a critique without defending, and separate what was said about the print from what was said about your taste.
- Say what you would change in the negative, not only in the print, and what that means for the next film.
Prerequisites
Section titled “Prerequisites”All four practical pages of this part, and their outputs. Reading the negative supplied the two sentences of intention and opened the map; the test-strip lab supplied the base exposure and the ring-around; the local-control lab supplied the interpretation and the notation the map is written in; and the finishing lab supplied the wash sequence, the residual-thiosulfate test, the flattening, the spotting and the mount. Session consistency supplies the tray discipline and the session log that this page’s second sitting depends on.

Safety classification
Section titled “Safety classification”Level A, on the criteria of the classification rubric, and it is the same Level A as every other practical page in this part: tray chemistry at working dilutions and room temperature, with gloves, eye protection, tongs and a wet side kept clear of a dry side. The one hot appliance is the dry-mounting press, if you use one, and the one blade is the mat cutter; both were introduced with their controls in the finishing lab and neither is used differently here.
What is not a hazard here, and why. Most of this session is looking at dry paper under a lamp and writing, and that half carries no chemical hazard at all, because the print in your hand is metallic silver in hardened gelatin with the undeveloped halide dissolved out and washed away. The caution that does apply during it is a conservation control rather than a safety one, and it points at the print rather than at you: the Library of Congress asks for freshly washed hands or clean lint-free cotton or inert plastic gloves such as nitrile, no contact with the image surface, and an auxiliary support under a print that has to be turned over. A fingerprint from the fourth hour of a critique session is the most avoidable defect in this part. The printing half of the session reinstates the full Level A controls of the pages it borrows from, and those pages remain the authority for them.

Estimated cost
Section titled “Estimated cost”Band ££, and almost all of it is capital that already exists by this page: the enlarger, the timer, the trays, the washer, the press or the cutting mat. What this session consumes is about eight sheets of paper, four litres of working solution and one mount. The dated figures live in the planner, and for this part they are mostly gaps.

The rows carrying numbers total about £25 to £39, and that is a floor rather than a total:
three of the ten rows have no sourced price, and all three — the board, the hinges and the dyes — are
exactly the materials that make this an exhibition print rather than a work print. The
part overview states the gap in the same terms
src/data/prices.json uses for the ones it already names, and no honest figure belongs in those
cells until a dated UK listing exists. Equipment is not in the table: a press is not consumed, and
neither is a lux meter.
If you work this assignment on resin-coated paper instead — a legitimate choice, and the cheaper one — the paper row costs less: 8 sheets of 8 × 10 in variable-contrast RC is £7.69 to £10.72 at £33.50 for 25 to £96.18 for 100, which brings the session’s sourced subtotal down to about £21 to £34 and still leaves the same three rows empty.
Alternative route
Section titled “Alternative route”This page needs a room that can be made dark for two sittings, and there is no substitute for that if you want two enlargements. But the assignment splits cleanly, and more of it survives without a darkroom than you would expect.
Everything after the fixer is daylight work. The wash, the drying, the flattening, the trimming, the spotting, the mounting and the whole critique — which is most of the four hours — happen in the light. ILFORD’s own beginner’s sheet makes the point about the room, not the water: print-making needs a room that can be blacked out, and no running water, because the washing stage takes place in daylight. Part XVI’s reversible blackout is enough, and a hired hour in a community or college darkroom is enough for the two exposures.
At contact size, the whole assignment works unchanged. Using Part XVI’s frame, a print the size of the negative can be anchored, filtered, developed, washed, finished, mounted, repeated from the map and critiqued by all three passes. Local moves are clumsy at that size and edge softness has almost no room to work in, so those rows of the map will be short; say so in the critique rather than pretending otherwise, since an honest note about what the format prevented is itself a technical observation.
With no darkroom at all, three of the four hours are still available and they are the three this page exists for. Assemble the set of other people’s reproductions, work the three passes on them in full, and write those critiques. Then take the best print you already own — from Part I’s photogram, from Part V’s hand-coated sheet, from anywhere — set up the judging station below, and critique it by the same method. The critique is a transferable skill and it is the part of this assignment that compounds; the two enlargements can wait for the hour you book. What genuinely cannot be done without a darkroom is the repeat-from-the-map test, since it needs two exposures separated in time, and that is worth booking a second hour for rather than faking.
Before anything: the light you will judge in
Section titled “Before anything: the light you will judge in”A print is not an object with a fixed appearance. It is a reflector, and what it looks like is a product of the paper and the light, so a judgement recorded without the light is not repeatable and cannot be compared with anybody else’s — including your own, next month.
What the course can source is the other end of the print’s life. The Library of Congress’s preservation guidance is explicit about display: permanent display of photographs is not recommended; damage from light is cumulative and depends on intensity, duration and wavelength; blue light from 400 to 500 nm and ultraviolet from 300 to 400 nm are especially damaging; light levels in exhibits should be kept as low as possible but high enough to allow for viewing, in the range of 30 to 100 lux; and ultraviolet should not exceed 75 microwatts per lumen.
Put those two things beside each other and the practical problem appears. A print is judged under a working light and hung at 30 to 100 lux, and the eye adapts to whichever it is given. Part XIII’s tone-reproduction page already owns the mechanism — a print is judged against itself rather than against the scene, and the same print reads darker against a white mount than against a black one — and this page simply applies it. The course’s own convention, and it is a convention rather than a measurement, is therefore: fix one judging station, record it, and look at every print in it; then look again at the display level before you call the print finished.
The judging station, recorded once and used for every print in the set
- The lamp, named and written down — type and colour temperature; angled so no specular reflection reaches the eye
- Illuminance at the print, in lux — meter face up where the print sits; a number, not an adjective
- A neutral mid-grey surround, larger than the print — the same print reads darker on white and lighter on black
- Viewing distance, held constant and recorded — take arm’s length and across the room; they show different faults
- The display check, at 30 to 100 lux — the Library of Congress range for exhibits — the only sourced figure here
One more variable belongs here because it is easy to blame on the light and is not the light. The image colour of a warm-tone paper is set partly by the processing, and ILFORD say so directly: long fixing times affect the image colour, and short washing times — such as when a washing aid is used — give a cooler image colour than long ones, with at least 30 minutes recommended for the warmest result. So if your two copies differ in colour, the wash times on the session log are the first place to look, not the lamp. On a neutral paper the question is smaller by design: ILFORD describe MULTIGRADE FB CLASSIC as having a white base tint and a neutral image colour, and their graded ILFOBROM GALERIE FB as having a neutral image colour “in all viewing conditions” — a manufacturer’s claim about that material, not a general property of silver gelatin.
Sitting one — the exhibition print
Section titled “Sitting one — the exhibition print”Two hours, and none of it is new.
- Re-read the two sentences you wrote before the first test strip. Do not start until you have.
- Re-anchor. A short test strip through the negative’s clear rebate, as the test-strip lab specifies, on the box you are about to use. This costs one halved sheet and removes the most common cause of a disappointing final print, which is a base exposure carried over from a different box.
- Print the map. Base exposure, filter or filters, and every local move as written, in the order the map gives. Do not improvise. If the map is wrong, note the correction on the map as a new version rather than remembering it.
- Develop to the fixed time, at the fixed temperature, with the session’s agitation, as session consistency requires, and run the session log alongside.
- Make three, not one. Sheet one to confirm the map, sheet two with the single change sheet one asks for, sheet three as the copy you will finish. Number them all and keep them all.
- Finish it: wash by the sequence you wrote down, prove the wash with the residual-thiosulfate test, dry, flatten, trim, spot, mount and label, all as the finishing lab sets out.
Sitting two — the second copy, from the map alone
Section titled “Sitting two — the second copy, from the map alone”About two hours, most of which is the writing rather than the printing. At least a day after the first sitting, and three weeks is better. Make the print again from the map, on paper from the same box, without looking at the first copy until both are dry.
Then measure the disagreement rather than describing it. Lay the two prints side by side in the judging station and answer three questions in order:
Are the local relationships the same? Is the sky the same amount darker than the mid-tone in both; is the dodged face the same amount lighter. This is the question the map exists to answer, because the local moves are written as ratios and ratios travel.
Is there an overall density difference? If the relationships hold but one sheet is uniformly darker, that is a speed difference, not a map failure. Express it in stops by finding which ring-around cell each print sits nearest.
Does the session log explain it? Sheet count against capacity, developer age, bath temperature, the box code. Those four cover most half-stop discrepancies, and without the log all four stay open.
The critique method
Section titled “The critique method”Three passes, always in this order, and the order is the whole design.
The three passes, and why intention comes last
- Technical — what is physically on the paper — only things you can point at; no preference is admitted at this stage
- Structural — how the picture is organised — every claim about the eye names the tone or edge that steers it
- Intention — does it do what you said it would — read the two sentences back; do not rewrite them to fit the print
- Close with one change, as a number or a setting — an aspiration cannot be tested next session; a setting can
The technical pass
Section titled “The technical pass”Only what can be pointed at. Work down the sheet in this order and write a line for each, even when the line says the item is fine.
Black point. Is there a tone on this print that is the paper’s maximum black, and is it in a place the picture wanted one? A print with no true black has no bottom to its scale and everything above reads soft, which is a fault. A print whose blacks are large and empty where the negative held shadow detail is a different fault with the opposite cause.
White point. Is there paper-base white anywhere, and should there be? A print with no clean white is muddy; a print whose highlight has blown to bare paper where the negative held texture has lost that texture permanently.
Separation in the areas that matter. Not everywhere — in the two or three areas that carry the picture. Two adjacent tones that the negative distinguishes and the print does not are a local contrast failure, and it is the one the filtration lesson exists to fix.
Sharpness, and where it fails. Distinguish a negative that is not sharp from an enlargement that is not focused from an easel or a carrier that moved. Grain crisp and detail soft means the negative; grain soft too means the enlargement.
Evenness. Hold the print at a glancing angle. A gradient across the sheet that you did not put there is the enlarger’s illumination or its alignment, and the enlarger certificate says which corners were already down. This is the technical item most often mistaken for an edge burn.
The edges. Did each edge get what the map says, and is any of it visible as a band rather than as a fall-off?
Spotting, dust and drying marks. White specks that were not spotted; spots built too dark, which read as holes; a drying mark from a squeegee edge; a fibre dried into the surface. All four are avoidable and all four are what a viewer’s eye finds first at close range.
Dry-down disappointment. Compare the finished dry print with what you thought you had in the tray. If the difference is larger than the correction you applied, your dry-down figure is wrong for this paper or this drying method — and that is a measurement to redo in Part XVIII, not something to compensate for by feel.
The structural pass
Section titled “The structural pass”Now how the picture is organised, and every claim names the physical fact that produces it.
Where does the eye enter? Usually the lightest large area, or the highest local contrast, or a face. Say which, and say what on the print makes it so.
Where does it go next, and does it come back? A path that leaves the frame and does not return is usually a bright edge or a line running out of a corner.
What do the edges do? An edge that is lighter than its neighbour leaks; an edge burned into a visible band builds a wall. Both are structural, both are on the map, and both were decisions.
What competes with the subject? Name the competitor and its tone. “A white sign at the right edge, two stops lighter than the wall” is usable. “The background is distracting” is not.
Did the local moves help, or merely happen? Take the map row by row. For each move, say what it was for and whether the finished print shows it doing that. A move that cannot be defended in one clause is a candidate for deletion in the next version, and deleting a move is as legitimate a revision as adding one.
The intention pass
Section titled “The intention pass”Read the two sentences you wrote before the first exposure. Do not read them earlier — the point of putting them last is that by now you have looked at the print carefully and cannot pretend not to have seen what is in it.
Then answer, in one sentence: does this print do that? Yes or no, before any qualification.
If yes, say which of the decisions on the map did the work, because that is the transferable part. If no, there are only three honest continuations, and they lead to different places: the print failed to execute an intention that was right, which is a printing problem; the intention was wrong for this negative, which is a reading problem and sends you back to the first page of this part; or the intention was vague enough that it cannot fail, which is a writing problem and is the most common of the three.
Why one print cannot be judged alone
Section titled “Why one print cannot be judged alone”The eye is poor at absolute judgements and good at comparative ones. “Is this too dark?” is hard; “which of these two is nearer right?” is easy. Every part of the method above therefore assumes something to compare against, and there are three, in increasing order of usefulness.
The previous version. Sheets one, two and three from sitting one, dry, side by side, in the judging station. This is the comparison that tells you whether the change you made was an improvement, and it is the reason the local-control lab insisted on one change per print.
The ring-around. Nine prints from one negative at a third of a stop and half a grade either side of a base. It converts “too dark” into “about one cell dark”, which is a number you can act on. Made once per paper-and-developer pair, it is the single most useful object in the darkroom for exactly this purpose.
A print you admire, made by somebody else, physically present. Not a screen image. A reproduction in a book is a halftone of a print, and a screen is emissive rather than reflective; both change the thing being compared. If you can get to a gallery, a museum print room or an exhibition with the print you are working on in a folder, do it once — the comparison is uncomfortable and it recalibrates in a way nothing else does.
The language of critique
Section titled “The language of critique”A critique is a description with a judgement attached, and it is worth something only when the description could be checked by somebody else looking at the same sheet.
Describe what is on the paper, not what you felt. “The sky is at maximum density from the horizon upwards, so the cloud structure the negative holds is not on the print” is checkable. “The sky is oppressive” is not. The first tells you to burn less or to burn through a softer filter; the second tells you nothing you can do on Tuesday.
Avoid the vocabulary of praise. Beautiful, powerful, striking, evocative, moody, timeless. Each of them can be attached to almost any print without becoming false, which is what makes them useless: a sentence that cannot be wrong carries no information. The test is the one Part VII gives for a portfolio statement — could this sentence appear unchanged about a completely different print? If it could, strike it.
Separate a fault from a preference, and label which you are giving. A fault is a departure from what the maker was trying to do, or a defect of execution that any maker would want removed: a drying mark, a leaking edge, a blown highlight where the negative held texture. A preference is a different intention: you would have printed it darker, or harder, or without the burn on the left. Both are worth saying. Presenting the second as the first is the most common failure of critique, and it is why the intention pass exists — it fixes the standard the print is being measured against before anybody starts measuring.
Practising on work that is not yours
Section titled “Practising on work that is not yours”Do this before you critique your own prints, in the same session. Applying the method to somebody else’s work is easier, faster and more honest, and half an hour of it makes the pass over your own print noticeably less forgiving.
The course supplies no reproductions and cannot. There is no image pipeline here and no photographs: every illustration in this course is a drawing made for it. So the set is one you assemble, and assembling it is part of the exercise — because deciding what you are allowed to use is a skill the image policy asks of the course and this page asks of you.
Where to get a set whose rights are clear. The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Open Access initiative, introduced in February 2017, makes all images of public-domain artworks and basic data on all accessioned works available for unrestricted use under Creative Commons Zero, marked with an OA icon and reachable through an Open Access filter in the online collection. That is the least ambiguous starting point. The Library of Congress’s Prints and Photographs Division is the largest, and its rights position is more nuanced and better teaching: the division conveys what it knows through catalogue records and rights statements, using wordings such as “considered to be in the public domain” and “no known restrictions”, and it states plainly that in all cases it is the researcher’s obligation to determine and satisfy copyright or other use restrictions — with the further caution that its guidance addresses use in the United States and that use elsewhere is governed by the law of the country of use.
Record six fields for every item you use, before you write a word about it. Creator, title, date, institution, licence and source URL — the same six the course’s own image policy requires of any figure. For a Library of Congress item, the credit line they ask for is the model: the Library of Congress, the specific collection, and the image reproduction number, as in Wright Brothers collection, Prints & Photographs Division, Library of Congress, LC-ppmsca-04598.
Receiving a critique, and what separates it from an opinion
Section titled “Receiving a critique, and what separates it from an opinion”At some point somebody says something about your print. The difference between a critique and an opinion is not politeness, tone or expertise: a critique names the thing on the paper it is about, and an opinion does not. “The left edge is lighter than the rest and my eye keeps going there” is a critique from anyone, including a stranger who knows nothing about printing. “It’s a bit flat” from a famous printer is an opinion until they say which tones.
Three working rules, and they are the course’s recommendation rather than a finding:
Do not explain while it is being given. The explanation is about the making; the critique is about the object. A viewer will not have the negative or the map, and their reaction is data precisely because they do not.
Write it down before you respond. Especially the remarks you disagree with, which are the ones you will otherwise lose. Two people independently finding the same edge is worth more than one person’s detailed argument about it.
Then sort it, the same way you sorted your own. Which remarks were faults and which were preferences. Act on the faults. Consider the preferences against your two sentences, and where a preference contradicts a stated intention, the intention wins for this print — and goes on the list of things to reconsider for the next one.
The honest conclusion: what you would change in the negative
Section titled “The honest conclusion: what you would change in the negative”Close the critique with the section that most printers skip, because it is the one that improves the next film rather than this print.
Look back at the technical pass and ask which of its items the printing could never have fixed.
If you needed a much harder grade than the paper’s published table suggested for the negative’s density range, the negative is flatter than you developed for, and the change is in film development time, not in filtration. If you needed a much softer one, the reverse. Part XIII’s paper sensitometry owns the matching and Part IX owns the controlled way to change it.
If a shadow you dodged had no detail to reveal, the film was underexposed for that subject, and no printing decision recovers it. That is an exposure-index conclusion, and it belongs in the exposure log as a change to your working index rather than as a note about this print.
If a highlight blew to base white with texture in the negative, the burn was too heavy or given through too hard a filter — a printing fault. If the negative had no texture there either, the film was overexposed or overdeveloped, and that is a development conclusion.
If the sharpest thing on the print is the grain, the negative was not sharp, and the cause is in the camera work rather than anywhere in this part.
Write one sentence for each finding, and one instruction to yourself for the next roll, expressed as a setting: an exposure index, a development time, a filter, an aperture. Not “expose more carefully”.
What to submit
Section titled “What to submit”- The edited proof sheet and the marked-up work print, from the first page of this part.
- The printing map, complete, versioned, and closed before the second sitting.
- The finished exhibition print, washed by a stated sequence and proved, dried, flattened, spotted, mounted on board bought against a specification rather than an adjective, and labelled.
- The second copy, from the map alone, on paper from the same box.
- The exposure record and the session log for both sittings, including the judging station.
- The written critique of both prints, in three passes, with the technical pass naming only things that can be pointed at, the structural pass naming the tone or edge behind every claim about the eye, and the intention pass answering yes or no before it qualifies.
- The critiques of the outside set, six to ten items, each with its six rights fields recorded and a note of which passes the medium supported.
- The measured disagreement between the two copies, in stops, with its attribution to the map, the paper or the session and the log entry that supports the attribution.
- The negative conclusions: what you would change in the film, each as a setting for the next roll.
- The toning decision, recorded on the map with its reason.
- A fine print is judged by a method, in a fixed order, or it is judged by mood. Technical first, because it is the only pass made of things that can be pointed at; structural second; intention last, because it is the pass a maker is least able to answer honestly once they know what they meant.
- The judging conditions are part of the judgement. ISO 3664 is the standard that specifies them — the 2009 third edition was withdrawn on 11 July 2025 and ISO 3664:2025 replaced it — but this course has not read its normative text and states no value from it. What it does state is a convention: one recorded station, one measured illuminance, a neutral surround, a recorded distance, and a second look at the 30 to 100 lux the Library of Congress gives for exhibits.
- The second copy is the assessment. The map is an instruction if a stranger could follow it, and the test of that is you, three weeks later, on paper from the same box. The course claims agreement to about a third of a stop overall with the local relationships intact — its own figure, derived from the ring-around’s resolution, not a manufacturer’s tolerance, because no maker in this corpus publishes one.
- A fault is not a preference. A fault departs from the stated intention or is a defect any maker would remove; a preference is a different intention. Say which you are giving, and note that the intention pass is what makes the distinction possible at all.
- Critique somebody else’s work first, from a set whose rights you recorded — the Met’s CC0 Open Access material, or the Library of Congress with its explicit warning that determining the rights is the researcher’s obligation — and be honest that a screen reproduction supports the structural pass and not the technical one.
- Close with the negative, not the print. A grade you had to reach for, a shadow with nothing in it, a highlight with no texture on either sheet — each of those is an instruction for the next film, expressed as a setting.
