Part VII Overview: The Art of Pinhole Photography
Part VI ended with a camera whose every dimension you had calculated and then measured, and with a handful of negatives made to find out whether the calculations held. Those negatives were evidence. The ones you make here are meant to be pictures.
Nothing about the physics changes. What changes is the direction the arithmetic runs. In Part VI you photographed a wall to discover what f/200 does; here you decide what you want a picture to look like, work backwards to the focal distance, the hole, the material and the duration that will produce it, write that decision down, and only then open the shutter. The whole part is one lesson on previsualisation followed by seven assignments and a review, and every one of them is built on the same three-part shape: do something, predict the result before you do it, and afterwards measure or judge the result against the prediction you wrote.

The rule that runs through all of it
Section titled “The rule that runs through all of it”No sheet is exposed without an entry in the exposure log, and the first ten fields of that entry are written before the shutter opens. Part VI established the log as the camera’s measuring instrument; here it becomes the instrument of previsualisation as well, because the field that matters most on these pages is the one Part VI did not need — the intention, written as a sentence, before you know whether you can achieve it. The review page at the end mines a season of those entries for two numbers nobody publishes: your paper’s effective speed in your processing, and its reciprocity trend.
Materials, and the camera you already have
Section titled “Materials, and the camera you already have”Paper negatives are the default, on the grounds of cost and of tonality: ILFORD rate MULTIGRADE RC as roughly equivalent to a film ISO of 3 to 6, and its blue-sensitive response is what gives these pictures their white skies and dark reds. Panchromatic sheet film appears on the landscape and night assignments, where the filter work and the published reciprocity data need it. Plates you coated yourself in Part V are an accepted route wherever paper is, with the caution that they have no speed until you have bracketed one.
The camera is the modular body from Part VI, unchanged: three focal distances through the extension frames, the graded pinhole plates with their measured diameters in the register, the flat and curved backs, and the offset plate position that raises the image without tilting the camera. Every one of those is used deliberately by at least one assignment.
Assessment, and what leaves this part
Section titled “Assessment, and what leaves this part”Each assignment produces one selected negative, one working positive, the log, and a critique paragraph that names causes rather than tastes. The review selects six to eight of them, sequences them and writes a plain statement. Those negatives are not printed properly here — fine printing is Parts XVIII and XIX — so they are stored and labelled to the log and handed on, along with the capstone’s requirement to calculate a pinhole and expose negatives with it.
