Safety library

Safety in this course is not a chapter to get through before the interesting part. It is built into every practical page: a classification, a list of hazards, the protective equipment, the ventilation, the waste streams, the clean-up and the disposal considerations, in the same place on every lab, build and experiment. This library gathers the material those pages rely on so it can be read on its own.

Every lab, build, experiment and break/fix page carries a safety level from A to D. The level is a hazard assessment of that page’s procedure, made from the specific substances, quantities, energies and steps on it, against the classification rubric. The rubric states what each level assumes you have and can do. If you do not have those controls, the page is not classified for you, whatever its letter.

The safety data sheet is the authority. The course quotes hazard classifications from named sources and dates them, but the SDS for the product you buy governs. Read it before you open the container, keep it, and re-read it when you buy a different grade or supplier.

Ventilation is not optional. Sulfite solutions release sulfur dioxide when acidified; acetic acid stop baths and ammonium thiosulfate fixers have odours because they release vapour; powders become dust when poured. A darkroom needs moving air, and nothing in the course is done in a sealed cupboard.

Gloves, glasses, and know why. Nitrile gloves resist the aqueous solutions of the darkroom; they do not resist everything, and the course says where something else is needed. Safety glasses are for splashes; goggles are for concentrated reagents; the difference is on the page.

Nothing that touches chemistry touches food. Dedicated, labelled containers and utensils, stored away from the kitchen, are a condition of Level A.

Label everything, date everything. A bottle without a label is waste, whatever is in it.

Silver is waste and a resource. Spent fixer carries dissolved silver that most jurisdictions prohibit from the drain and that can be recovered. The course teaches the chemistry of both.

Local rules govern disposal. The course explains the chemistry of neutralisation and recovery and the general practice of collection. It does not know what is lawful where you are.

Level D is not a challenge. The historical processes classified D are described so their chemistry can be understood, and for no other reason.

Every practical page assumes: an eyewash provision (a bottle at minimum, plumbed for Level B and above) within reach; a spill kit suited to the reagents in use; the supplier’s SDS to hand for first-aid instructions; and a telephone. If a substance enters the eye, rinse for the time the SDS states, which is usually longer than feels necessary, and seek medical advice with the SDS in hand.

The course’s rule is that a practical page cites these rather than restating a rule in its own words. Thirty-odd pages of prose written independently would drift, and a reader who found two different wordings of the same control would have no way to tell which was current. One page, one policy, cited everywhere.

The procedures these references turn into live in the SOP library: opening and closing a session, mixing from a stock, labelling a container, handling silver nitrate, responding to a spill, routing the two waste streams, and the instrument checks. A reference page settles a question once; a procedure is what you follow at the bench with the question already settled, and the two are kept apart deliberately.
