The Assignment Path: Fourteen Pictures That Build One Photographer
Fourteen pictures are named in this course as milestones, scattered across nine parts and something over a year of work. Read one at a time they look like a bag of exercises with a photographic flavour. Read in order they are a single argument, and the argument is this: at each station the photographer gains control of exactly one more thing, and the order is the order in which control can actually be gained.
That is why the path starts without a camera and ends without a picture.
The argument of the path
Section titled “The argument of the path”Light first, because a photogram needs light and chemistry and nothing else, and a camera met after a photogram is understood as an addition — a device for organising light that was already making pictures — rather than as the place photography begins.
Then the camera itself, and it arrives as an instrument to be measured rather than as a tool to be used. Then the subject, in five steps that each hold one variable still: a subject you arrange, a subject that cannot move, a subject that moves while the shutter is open, a subject that is a person, and a subject lit by light you did not choose. Then durations long enough that the film’s own behaviour stops being a correction and becomes most of the arithmetic.
Then the print, twice: once as an object you made from a sheet you coated, and once as an interpretation you can repeat. Then the chemistry becomes a decision — the material of the image, the chemistry of the finished image, and finally the process itself as a variable under test. And then a body of work, which is not a fifteenth picture but a different kind of skill entirely.
The fourteen milestones, and the one control each adds

Milestones 1 and 2: light, then the camera
Section titled “Milestones 1 and 2: light, then the camera”The photogram is the botanical cyanotype of Part I: three finished prints on pre-coated paper, exposed in sunlight against a timed test strip, washed in plain water, logged and critiqued. It is the first permanent picture in the course and the first entry in your exposure log, and both of those facts matter more than the picture.
It is motivated by the experiment beside it, the image that would not stay, where objects on ordinary photographic paper give a printing-out image in daylight with no chemistry at all — and then the image goes on printing until it is gone. The pair is the whole of photography’s first problem in an afternoon: making a picture is easy, keeping it is not. A student who has watched a photogram disappear has a reason to care about fixing that no amount of explanation supplies.
The first pinhole negatives are made in commissioning the pinhole camera, and the page’s own description is the point: fourteen sheets of paper that prove the camera is light-tight, measure its flare, calibrate its exposure and test the two optics lessons. Not one of them is a picture, and that is deliberate. The path’s first camera exposure is an instrument measurement, because a camera whose light-tightness has not been demonstrated will spend the next six assignments producing faults you will attribute to yourself.
Milestones 3 to 8: six assignments, six variables
Section titled “Milestones 3 to 8: six assignments, six variables”Part VII carries seven picture-making assignments. Six of them are milestones on this path. Each isolates one photographic variable, and the framing below is Part VII’s own rather than a paraphrase.

The seventh assignment is enrichment rather than a milestone. Panorama, curved plane and multiple pinholes isolates projection geometry, and it is excellent — but its variable is the camera, not the photographer. The path is about control the photographer gains; changing the recording surface from a plane to a cylinder changes the instrument. Do it if you want it, and if you do, its build is a strong candidate for the capstone’s own instrument requirement.
The camera phase closes with the portfolio review, which makes no new picture. It selects and sequences a season’s work against the intentions written before each exposure, and then mines the same logs for a personal paper speed and a reciprocity trend nobody publishes. It is the rehearsal for milestone 14 and for the whole of the capstone’s Stage 3, and it is the first place in the course where a log stops being an obligation and becomes data.
Milestones 9 and 10: the print as object, and as interpretation
Section titled “Milestones 9 and 10: the print as object, and as interpretation”These two are the pair that most often gets collapsed, so the distinction is worth stating flatly. A proof answers “what is on this negative”. A print is an object made to be looked at. They are different products of different sessions and they belong to different milestones — or, in the proof’s case, to none.
Milestone 9, the contact print, is the hand-coated print of Part V: one finished print on an emulsion you made, in three variants with one selected, presented beside the same image on bought paper. It is the path’s contact print because it is the first time you make a print rather than a proof, and because the sheet itself is yours — the coating weight, the batch, the version code and the step wedge are all part of the record.
Milestone 10, the enlarged silver print, is the exhibition print and its critique. One negative carried to a mounted print, then made again from the printing map alone, then judged twice by a method that goes technical, structural, intention, in that order, under a light you measured and wrote down. Three things enter the path here that were not available before: magnification, the enlarger’s own contribution to the image, and local control — and with local control comes the first record in the course that a stranger has to be able to follow.
Why the proof sheet is not a milestone. The routine contact proof sheet lives inside reading the negative and the work print, where it belongs: it is a step in a printing session, made fast, judged as an index. Promoting it to a milestone would put a fourteenth station on the path that adds no control at all.
Milestones 11 to 13: the chemistry becomes a choice
Section titled “Milestones 11 to 13: the chemistry becomes a choice”Up to milestone 10 the chemistry has been a given. You mixed it, you understood it, you measured it — but which chemistry it was had been settled by the part you were in. The last three picture milestones each hand you one of those settlements to make yourself.
Milestone 11, the alternative-process print, changes what the image is made of. A silver-gelatin print is filamentary silver in gelatin on a coated base; a cyanotype is an iron-blue pigment in the paper’s own fibres, with no binder and no silver anywhere. That is not a variation on a print, it is a different object, and the conservation literature identifies the two by different signatures for exactly that reason. The milestone is the process comparison atlas of Part XXV, which prints one image across several processes and fills in the measured fields that make them comparable. For a reader who goes no further than blue, the stopping point is Part XXI’s cyanotype assignment — four pieces including a print bigger than a tray and a piece of cloth whose wash-fastness is measured rather than believed. That is a complete milestone, not a reduced one: the control it adds is the decision about material, and cyanotype makes that decision as fully as palladium does at a fiftieth of the cost.
Milestone 12, the toned print, changes the chemistry of the finished image, which is a narrower and more interesting decision than it sounds. Part XX’s assignment requires a matched untoned control from the same session, printed from the same map, so that the change is measured against something rather than admired against memory. The control is the instrument; the toned print is the result.
Milestone 13, the controlled developer comparison, makes the process the variable. Part XXVII’s assignment takes four developers from four families to the same contrast index rather than the same time — which is the whole methodological point, because comparing developers at equal time compares two things at once. It is prepared by Part IX’s laboratory report, which is where a claim first has to be bounded by what the reading method can carry, and by Part XV’s characterisation assignment, which is where the personal processing table the capstone depends on is first produced.
Milestone 14, and why it is different in kind
Section titled “Milestone 14, and why it is different in kind”The final portfolio is not another picture. It is an argument, and the skill it tests — choosing six from sixty, putting them in an order, and saying in plain language what they are for — is the only one on the path that cannot be practised on a single sheet.
That is worth dwelling on, because it is the reason a portfolio is genuinely difficult for people who make good individual prints. Every earlier milestone can be improved by making the thing again better. This one is improved by subtraction: by removing a print you like because it does not serve the set, by noticing that two works say the same thing and keeping one, by putting the strongest picture second rather than first because the sequence needs somewhere to go. None of those moves has an analogue at the level of one sheet, and none of them can be learned by making more sheets.
The one rehearsal the course provides is Part VII’s portfolio review, which is why it is on the path at all despite making no new picture.
The record that runs the whole length
Section titled “The record that runs the whole length”A milestone is a picture and its record, and the second half is not a formality. The capstone will ask you to repeat your own work, and the record is the only thing that makes that possible.
The record chain: what is opened where, and what reads it back
- The lab notebook — opened in Part IIEvery session from the first weighing onwards. Read back by every later part that asks what you actually did rather than what you meant to do.
- The exposure log — opened at milestone 1The cyanotype photogram is its first entry, before there is a camera to log. Read back by Part VII's portfolio review to fit a personal paper speed and a reciprocity trend.
- The formula version record — opened in Part IXEvery bottle you mix carries a code. Read back by Part XXVII, which cannot compare curves whose developers cannot be named.
- The instrument certificates — opened in Parts XIV and XVRead back by every number the capstone reports with an uncertainty.

The rule, stated once: a picture without its record is not a milestone completed. That sounds severe, and it is meant to be a working rule rather than a moral one. You will not always keep the record. When you have not, write down that you have not, at the time — because the difference between “no record” and “record lost” is itself information, and the capstone’s self-audit asks for it.
Two supporting gates that are not pictures
Section titled “Two supporting gates that are not pictures”Neither is in the brief’s list of fourteen. Both are treated as gates here, because the capstone depends on them and a reader who skips them will discover it at Stage 2.
Your archival processing sequence turns processing from something you do into something you have written down and then executed: an SOP for film and fibre print from developer to dry, proved with a clearing time and two spot tests, and then revised with the revision given a number. Capstone Stage 3 and Stage 4 are executions of that document. If it does not exist, they have nothing to execute.
Characterising a film and developer with your own instruments certifies the two instruments and produces the personal processing table: a development time for a stated target contrast index, with a tolerance derived from your own slope, and an effective exposure index under the course’s own criterion. Capstone Stage 2 verifies its formulated developer against that table, and Stage 3 decides from it whether the process landed where it was aimed. Without it, both stages become opinions.
Alternative route
Section titled “Alternative route”The path is a recommended progression, not a gate. The course’s accessibility commitment means no requirement of the capstone may be reachable by only one route, and the same has to be true of the path that leads to it. Three re-entries and their honest costs.
Joined the course at Part XVIII, with an enlarger and no interest in pinhole. Milestones 3 to 8 are the ones at risk, and the substitution that preserves the progression is to run the same six variables on the camera you have: a still life under lights you control, a building with the geometry made explicit, a long exposure with moving content, a portrait at a shutter speed a person can hold, a landscape with a filter factor applied and bracketed, and one exposure long enough that your film’s published reciprocity data has to be used. What is lost is the pinhole’s particular virtue — that every optical quantity in the picture can be computed from three numbers — and that loss is repaid at capstone Stage 1, where the pinhole calculation is required of everybody whatever their instrument. Say in the self-audit which six pictures you substituted.
Cannot build a camera. Milestone 2’s content is commissioning, not woodwork. A bought camera can be commissioned: a light-tightness test on paper, a flare measurement, an exposure calibration against a meter, and a first negative against a calculated exposure. Run Part VI’s commissioning page against the camera you own and the milestone is genuinely complete, because the control it adds is the habit of treating a camera as an instrument with measurable faults.
No access to an enlarger. Milestone 10 is the one that cannot be fully substituted, and this page will not pretend that contact printing supplies it: magnification, the enlarger’s contribution and local control at a distance are what the milestone adds, and a contact print has none of them. What can be substituted is the part that carries forward — the printing map, the repeat from the map alone, and the three-pass critique — all of which work on a contact print made under a mapped light source. Run the assignment that way, record what was not tested, and carry the gap into the capstone as a declared substitution rather than as a silence.
The self-audit before you start the capstone
Section titled “The self-audit before you start the capstone”One table, fourteen rows, and it is the assessment for this page. For each milestone:
- The picture. Which one, where it is, and whether it is a negative, a print or both.
- The record. Which sheets exist, and where. “Somewhere in the notebook” is not an entry.
- One sentence on what it taught you to control. In terms of control, not taste — “I learned to hold the geometry by shifting the pinhole rather than tilting the camera”, not “I got better at architecture”.
Then two judgements on the whole table.
Pick the two milestones you completed least well and say what you would do differently, again in terms of control rather than taste. This is the exercise that most often changes a capstone plan, because the weakest station is frequently the one the intended project leans on hardest.
Decide, for each gap, whether to go back or to carry it forward deliberately. Both are legitimate. Going back costs weeks; carrying it forward costs a stated limitation in the documentation set, and the capstone’s rubric explicitly rewards the second over a quiet omission. What is not legitimate is discovering the gap at Stage 4.
Finally, and this is the link to the next page: state which milestone’s work will supply which requirement of the capstone specification. Some will — an existing exhibition print can be a portfolio work if its records survive — and some will not, because requirement 3 asks for negatives exposed during the capstone. Doing that mapping now is what turns fourteen finished exercises into the raw material of a project.
The path is fourteen stations, and at each one the photographer gains control of exactly one more thing: light without a camera, then the camera as an instrument, then five kinds of subject, then durations at which the film’s own behaviour dominates the arithmetic, then the print as an object and as an interpretation, then the material of the image, the chemistry of the image and the process itself, and finally a body of work.
Two of the stations are inversions the course lives with rather than hides: the contact print is made in Part V under glass and a weight, ninety pages before the frame that would hold it is built, and the comparison between the two arrangements is deferred to Part XVI’s further experiments. Two gates that are not pictures — the processing SOP and the instrument characterisation — are treated as milestones here because the capstone reads both.
And the record runs the whole length. Every milestone opens or continues a sheet that a later page reads back, and the capstone reads all of them. A picture without its record is a picture; it is not a milestone completed, and the difference only becomes visible when somebody asks you to make it again.
