Potassium chloride
A chloride emulsion is slow, blue-sensitive and contrasty — the chemistry of gaslight and contact-printing papers rather than of film — and the salt that makes it is this one. Three grams of it, dissolved in gelatin, is the whole halide side of a sheet of hand-made printing paper.
In photography
Section titled “In photography”The salted gelatin. Denise Ross’s adaptation of T. Thorne Baker’s homemade chloride emulsion — his article ran in American Photography in March 1943, her gaslight-paper version dates from 2012 — begins by dissolving 3 g of potassium chloride in 150 g of distilled water, stirring 25 g of photographic gelatin into it, and letting the gelatin bloom. The silver solution is 5 g of silver nitrate. When the salted gelatin has melted and reached 49 to 51 °C, the silver goes in and the emulsion is precipitated.
Why potassium and not sodium. Both salts put chloride into the gelatin and the anion is what the silver reacts with, so the choice is between two counter-ions that end up as spectators — potassium nitrate or sodium nitrate in the wash water. Kodak’s 1928 primer treats the pair as near-identical: “potassium chloride: white salt, very similar to sodium chloride.” What is not identical is the weight. Sodium chloride’s relative molecular mass is 58.44 against 74.55, so a gram of sodium chloride carries 28 per cent more chloride than a gram of potassium chloride, and substituting one for the other gram-for-gram changes the halide excess that the previous paragraph was about. Multiply by 74.55/58.44 = 1.28 going from sodium to potassium.
The course has found no source that says the counter-ion itself changes the emulsion, and it does not assert one. What the sources do say is that formulas specify which chloride they mean, and the reason is arithmetic.
Properties
Section titled “Properties”Colourless hygroscopic crystals with a strong saline taste; a white granular powder in the food grade. Relative molecular mass 74.55. Chemical Safety Card 1450 gives a melting point of 770 to 773 °C, a sublimation point of 1500 °C and a density of 1.98 g/cm³.
Solubility, and a warning inside it. HSDB gives 35.5 g per 100 g of water at 25 °C and notes that one gram dissolves in 2.8 mL of water but only 1.8 mL of boiling water — so heat buys about a third more, unlike sodium chloride, where it buys almost nothing. Kodak’s 1928 table, which is written for someone making stock solutions in an unheated winter darkroom, gives 26 ounces per 100 fluid ounces of saturated solution at 40 °F against 31 at 70 °F, and advises against making a stock stronger than the cold figure allows.
HSDB’s other note is the one an emulsion maker should read twice: adding hydrochloric acid, sodium chloride or magnesium chloride diminishes the solubility of potassium chloride in water. That is the common-ion effect, which OpenStax gives as the general rule that a shared ion suppresses the dissolution equilibrium of a slightly soluble salt. It is the same principle that keeps silver chloride out of solution in an emulsion with excess halide, seen from the other end — and in practice it means a salted-gelatin solution made with tap water of unknown chloride content is not quite the solution the formula describes.
Handling
Section titled “Handling”The ECHA aggregate says not classified: 825 of 875 company reports state that potassium chloride does not meet GHS hazard criteria, and a second entry agrees. That is a large number of reports, but only 5.7 per cent of companies supplied information at all, and ten notifications covering 50 reports do carry hazard codes that PubChem does not display because none reaches its 10 per cent threshold. The honest form is unclassified on a broad but shallow evidence base, and the course does not translate that into a clean bill. Chemical Safety Card 1450 leaves its own classification box empty and still records that the substance is irritating to the eyes and respiratory tract, that a nuisance-causing dust concentration is reached quickly on dispersion, and that ingestion of large amounts could cause cardiac dysrhythmia. Neither EH40 nor the NIOSH Pocket Guide sets an exposure limit, and EH40 states that absence from its list does not indicate that a substance is safe.
Why Level A. Against the course rubric this meets Level A on every criterion, and comfortably: no classification at all, let alone one approaching the irritant ceiling; nothing heated by the salt itself; no mains work; and wash water as the only waste. Gloves, eye protection and dust discipline are the whole of the control.
An emulsion make produces wash water carrying potassium nitrate, unreacted chloride and, unavoidably, some silver. The silver decides where it goes: collect the wash as a silver-bearing stream and route it as photographic chemistry, as the disposal caveat sets out. Kodak’s J-300 guidance for amateur photographers puts wash water into the sewer where there is one, after silver recovery, and states that septic systems are not designed to treat photographic processing solutions; ILFORD’s route for domestic users in the United Kingdom is a household waste and recycling centre. Potassium chloride by itself is fertiliser and food salt, and nothing on this page should be read as saying otherwise — the collection is for what it is carrying.
History
Section titled “History”Potassium chloride is one of the few darkroom salts with no interesting photographic history of its own, and that is worth stating rather than manufacturing one. It is a mineral, sylvite, mined and refined at agricultural scale as muriate of potash; it entered photography as a convenient soluble chloride and it has stayed there. Kodak’s primer gives it a single line in a list. What has a history is the paper it makes: the slow, contrasty, blue-sensitive chloride emulsions of gaslight and contact-printing papers, which is where this salt’s story properly belongs and where the course tells it.
