Silver selenide
A selenium-toned print and an untoned one can be indistinguishable across a room. The difference is that in one of them the silver has been converted, particle by particle, into this compound — and the reason anyone bothers is not what it looks like but how long it lasts.
In photography
Section titled “In photography”It is what the toner makes. Kodak’s toner sheet states it in one sentence about its Rapid Selenium Toner: it converts the silver image to silver selenide. That is the whole of the product’s chemistry as its maker describes it, and the rest of the sheet is about dose. At 1+20 the purpose is print protection; at 1+20 or 1+40 the aim is more shadow contrast and maximum density with minimum tone change; the colour it produces depends on the paper, giving cool chocolate-browns on warm-tone papers, purplish browns on neutral ones and very little or no change on cold-tone papers. It also tends to intensify the image, so Kodak suggests shortening development slightly if a print is to be toned.
That last group of facts is why selenium toning occupies a strange place in the darkroom. It is the only toner in common use that can be run for permanence alone, on a paper that will barely change colour, so the print looks untouched and is nonetheless a different substance.
The change of purpose is documented. The Getty Conservation Institute’s atlas dates it: selenium was first used to give silver gelatin photographs a dark brown-orange tone, and only later recognised for its ability to increase the chemical and environmental stability of silver particles, after which it became a step in the archival processing developed for the art and museum market in the second half of the twentieth century. The atlas also records that the treatment can be detected by X-ray fluorescence long afterwards — the selenium is still there, and still where the image is.
The conversion is not complete, and a maker says so. Moersch’s own account of brown toning records that after six minutes in a selenium bath not all the silver has been transformed to silver selenide, and that the remainder can be re-halogenated and toned in thiourea afterwards. That is worth more than any general claim: it means a selenium-toned print is normally a mixture of silver selenide and untoned silver, in proportions the printer chose by time and dilution without necessarily knowing it. Protection is proportional to conversion, and conversion is partial.
Properties
Section titled “Properties”Ag₂Se, relative molecular mass 294.71, CAS 1302-09-6, and as a mineral naumannite. Beyond that identity the record is close to empty: PubChem holds no solubility entry, no physical description and no classification, and the photographic literature describes toned prints rather than the isolated compound. This page is unusually short on properties because the sources are, and padding it with values from general inorganic chemistry that the course has not read would be exactly the failure Rule 1 exists to prevent.
Two things can be said with confidence. It is not light-sensitive in any way the course uses, which is what makes it a terminal image substance rather than a sensitiser. And it is made in place from metallic silver, so its distribution in the print is the distribution of the image that preceded it — the same rule that governs the sulfide, and the reason a toner cannot change the grain structure of a photograph, only its chemistry.
Handling
Section titled “Handling”There is nothing to quote, and the honest form of that sentence matters. PubChem carries no GHS classification for this compound from any source. What does reach it is EH40, twice and indirectly. Selenium and compounds, except hydrogen selenide, as Se carries a long-term workplace exposure limit of 0.1 mg/m³, and a selenide is a compound of selenium, so the entry applies by its own wording; it is the airborne limit for a dust, and a print is not a dust. Dihydrogen selenide is listed separately at 0.02 ppm, among the lowest figures in the whole table, and that is the number that governs the one thing you must not do.
The compound stays in the picture; the bath goes in a bottle. Kodak’s environmental guidance for amateur photographers withholds every disposal route from used Rapid Selenium Toner except a household hazardous waste collection facility or a licensed hauler — no sewer, no treatment works, no household refuse — and it is the only product in that table treated so strictly. The same bath has also dissolved a little silver from the print, so it belongs in the silver-bearing stream on a second count. Check your local regulations; they govern, and there is no jurisdiction in which this goes down a sink.
History
Section titled “History”The compound has no history of its own, because nobody set out to make it. What has a history is the change of purpose the Getty atlas records: a toner adopted in the early twentieth century for a brown-orange colour, kept for decades as one warm-tone option among many, and then re-read in the second half of the century as a permanence treatment when the museum market began asking how long a print would last. The chemistry did not change. What changed was which of its two effects the printer was buying, and by the 1980s a great many photographers were putting prints through a bath whose visible result they had chosen to make as small as possible.
