Handling silver nitrate
Purpose
Section titled “Purpose”To get silver nitrate out of its bottle, into solution and onto the material you meant it for, with all of it accounted for: none on you, none in an ordinary bin, none in a drain, and none left in a vessel you were going to rinse out.
When to use it
Section titled “When to use it”Every time the bottle is opened — Part IV’s halide work, Part V’s makes and coating, and every printing-out sensitiser after them.
It does not apply to a dry, coated, processed sheet. That carries silver and no free silver nitrate, and it is handled as paper.
Before you start
Section titled “Before you start”You should already have read silver nitrate: the reagent that sets the rules and run opening the laboratory. This is a Level B procedure: chemical splash goggles that seal against the face, gloves, an apron, eyewash provision within reach and a spill kit suited to the reagent.
On the gloves. The permeation guide this course read carries no entry for silver nitrate at all, so there is no breakthrough time to work to. The glove is splash protection with a short permitted contact time, changed the moment it is contaminated rather than on a schedule — and because the stain appears hours after the contact, a mark on a glove means the change is already overdue. On the bench: distilled or deionised water; a dedicated spatula that touches nothing else; a tared glass or plastic weighing vessel; an amber bottle labelled in advance; a tray under everything; the silver waste container within reach of the sink. Absorbent stays in the spill kit rather than standing loose beside the bottle.
Procedure
Section titled “Procedure”- Put on splash goggles and gloves before the cap comes off. Confirm you can reach the eyewash with your eyes shut and the spill kit from where you will stand.
- Clear the bench of everything organic that does not need to be there — paper, card, cloth, a wooden board — and work over a tray.
- Stand the silver waste container where you will be able to reach it from the sink.
- Take the bottle from its own shelf and look at the solid. It should be white or colourless.
- Tare a glass or plastic weighing vessel on the balance. Never a paper boat, and never a folded sheet of paper you intend to tip from.
- Add the solid slowly with the dedicated spatula, at bench level, not poured from a height.
- Write down the reading you actually got before you do anything else.
- Cap the stock bottle and return it to its shelf now, not at the end.
- Add the weighed solid to distilled or deionised water in a vessel large enough to swirl. Do not heat it; nothing in this course comes near saturation.
- Rinse the weighing vessel into the mixing vessel with a little of the water the recipe already calls for.
- Make up to the final volume, and look at the solution against the light. It should be clear.
- Fill the amber bottle, cap it and put it in the dark.
- Keep every implement glass, polyethylene or polypropylene from start to finish — no steel spatula, no metal stirrer, no metal funnel.
- Rinse every vessel, brush and gloved hand into the silver waste container. Not into the sink.
- Take the gloves off by the removal sequence, into the sealed bag, and wash your hands.
How you know it worked
Section titled “How you know it worked”- The solution is clear and colourless, with no curd, no specks and no mirror on the glass.
- The mass you recorded and the final volume you reached are both written down, and the strength on the label was calculated from those two numbers.
- The stock bottle is capped, on its own shelf, with nothing organic beside it.
- Every rinse from the session is in the silver waste container, and the sink took none of it.
- Nothing that touched the substance — wipe, glove, filter, absorbent — is in an ordinary bin.
If a step fails
Section titled “If a step fails”Step 4, the solid is grey or blackened, or the bottle has a mirror on the glass. Silver has begun to come out. What is in the bottle is no longer at the strength the label implies, and no arithmetic recovers it. Route it as silver-bearing waste.
Step 6, solid is spilled. Collect it dry first — a card or a scoop into a closed container, worked slowly and close to the surface so as not to raise a dust — and only then take up the residue with a single damp disposable wipe. Everything loaded goes into a sealed bag. The full sequence is responding to a spill.
Step 9 or 11, the solution goes cloudy or white. Chloride in the water has precipitated silver chloride, which is effectively insoluble and itself light-sensitive. Silver has left the solution and you cannot know how much, so adding more silver nitrate corrects nothing. The batch is waste.
Step 11, a brown tinge or grey specks appear on standing. The same conclusion by a different route: silver is being reduced. It goes to the waste container rather than onto a sheet of paper.
Step 13, only a metal implement is to hand. Stop and find another. Any metal more reactive than silver plates your silver onto itself and puts its own metal into your solution — that is an industrial recovery process, and it is not one you want happening in a beaker by accident.
A splash on the skin. Rinse at once and at length; that is about limiting absorption rather than about the colour, because by the time the mark appears the silver is already bound. Then leave it alone — this course recommends no chemical stain remover, having found no source it would accept that evaluates one for use on skin.
A splash in the eye. Irrigate immediately with the lids held open and keep going; work to fifteen minutes and get medical advice with the sheet in your hand. The first aid quick reference is the page to have read before this happens.
What to record
Section titled “What to record”The batch line: date, mass weighed, water used and its kind, final volume, strength calculated, and the version and revision date of the sheet you read. Then the volume added to the silver waste container, and any splash, spill or stain — including the ones that came to nothing, because a stain that appeared three hours later is the only evidence you will ever get that a control slipped.
