    Complete the hypothesis, control and changed-variable fields before the run. A hypothesis rewritten after seeing the result cannot show what the experiment tested. Identify the material by batch and the developer by its formula version, not only by a familiar trade name.

    For a variant, record the published parent, the difference, the reason for it and the predicted consequence. The version code identifies your record; it does not imply that the variant has been independently validated. A change of chemical form, dilution, mixing conditions or processing sequence can be material even when the shorthand formula name remains unchanged.

    During the run, record what actually happened: quantities, final volumes, temperature, pH where measured, time, agitation and departures. Preserve failed readings and the reason for excluding any observation from an analysis. Density records need instrument geometry, calibration and a stated exposure scale. Afterwards, separate observations from explanations and choose one next change that would discriminate between competing explanations.
