Muddy print from a snatched development
Owned by Print Developer Chemistry and the Developer-Paper Pair for the plateau that makes development to completion possible, and by developing the print consistently, which draws the line this entry needs: a water-bath or two-bath print is still developing, and that is the mechanism, while a snatched print has been removed from the reaction and stops where it stopped. Break/Fix — the print that will not go black says this entry owns the mechanism. All three were written after it; the entry itself came from development kinetics and the paper manufacturers’ own figures.
What you see
Section titled “What you see”A print that looked right in the dish and is disappointing dry. Blacks are dark grey rather than black, the mid-tones are heavy, the whole thing reads as muddy rather than as light or dark, and the tone is often slightly warmer than the same paper properly developed. On fibre paper the mud is worse after dry-down.
Sometimes there is unevenness with it — patches or a general mottle — because a print removed early was removed while development was still in progress and therefore still uneven.
That second symptom is the course’s own reading and is marked as one. Part XVIII’s break/fix page looked for a manufacturer statement that a snatched print is uneven as well as weak and found none: what the makers state is the weakness — underdeveloped, lacking in contrast and density. The inference is that agitation is never perfectly even in the first thirty seconds and that what is still in progress is by definition not yet uniform, which is why this entry says sometimes rather than always. It is settled on your own bench by pulling one sheet at thirty seconds, giving its twin the full time, and then looking across the pulled sheet rather than at its overall density.
Likely causes
Section titled “Likely causes”- Pulling the print when the image looks right. The image appearing and development finishing are different events separated by most of the development time.
- Over-exposure compensated by a short development. The commonest route in, because it feels like control.
- A bath too warm, so the image arrives sooner and the temptation is greater.
- Judging under a bright inspection lamp, where a wet print looks lighter and more open than it will be dry.
What is happening: the chemistry and physics
Section titled “What is happening: the chemistry and physics”Development is a rate process with a beginning, a middle and an end, and the paper manufacturers put numbers on all three. ILFORD state that on correctly exposed fibre prints the image will begin to appear after 35 seconds in their developers, with recommended times measured in minutes — and that development may be extended to 6 minutes without any noticeable change in contrast or fog.
Read those two sentences together and the whole entry follows. There is a broad plateau on which a print is fully developed, and it is reached well after the image has appeared. Below the plateau, density is still climbing. The deepest tones climb longest, because they have the most silver to reduce, so a print snatched early loses its blacks first and its mid-tones second — which is exactly the compressed, muddy scale the reader sees.
The unevenness has the same origin. Development proceeds by diffusion at the emulsion surface, and any local difference in how fresh developer reaches the paper shows as a density difference while development is incomplete. Given the full time, the differences even out. Given half of it, they do not, and they are locked in by the stop bath.
And why compensating exposure with time fails. Reducing development to fix an over-exposed print does not simply make the print lighter; it makes it lighter unevenly, because it moves the print off the plateau. The manufacturers’ own advice for consistency runs the other way: ILFORD suggest that when batch processing a large number of prints it may be advantageous to reduce exposure slightly and extend development.
Diagnostic questions
Section titled “Diagnostic questions”- What was the time, and what does the paper’s datasheet say? ILFORD’s MULTIGRADE developer at 1+9 is one minute for MULTIGRADE IV RC DeLuxe; PQ Universal at 1+9 is two.
- Were you watching the print or the clock? Only one of those is a measurement.
- Was the print judged wet, under a bright lamp? Both halves of that sentence bias you towards pulling early.
- Is there unevenness as well as mud? Unevenness plus flatness is strong evidence for incomplete development rather than for exposure.
- Are you compensating a heavy exposure? If so, this is the fault by design, and the fix is at the enlarger.
Corrective action
Section titled “Corrective action”Re-print at full development and correct the exposure instead. That is the whole remedy, and it is a remedy at the enlarger rather than at the dish.
Use the plateau. ILFORD’s six-minute statement for fibre prints means the cost of over-developing is small and the cost of under-developing is a wasted sheet.

Prevention
Section titled “Prevention”A timer, and the manufacturer’s time. Development by inspection is a printing-out habit and this is a developing-out material.
Keep the safelight where ILFORD put it — at least 1.2 m from the developing dish — so that the print in the dish is not being judged under the brightest light in the room.
Standardise development and vary exposure. It is the only way to make one print comparable with the next, and it is what a print control chart assumes.
