Sodium selenosulfate
Sulfite dissolves selenium. That single fact is the reason this compound exists, the reason the photographic literature keeps circling it, and the reason nobody in that literature quite pins it down. This page collects what can be established about it and marks, clearly, where the evidence stops.
In photography
Section titled “In photography”One use is documented and specific. Wall’s 1929 monograph on emulsions, discussing Sheppard’s discovery that traces of sulfur compounds in gelatin are what make an emulsion fast, lists the other substances found to do the same job: sodium thiosulphate — hypo — and then sodium selenosulphate, which he writes as Na₂SeSO₃, together with potassium tellurotellurate and potassium isoselenocyanate. All of them, Wall says, combine with the silver halides to form decomposable complexes. The doses are extraordinary: one part in 1,000,000 to one part in 300,000. And the response is not monotonic — the action reaches a maximum at a certain quantity and then falls away again, with a corresponding increase in fog.
That is chemical sensitisation, and the selenium version of it is the sulfur version with one atom changed. Where hypo leaves specks of silver sulfide on a crystal face, the selenosulfate leaves specks of silver selenide. The course teaches sulfur sensitisation because published doses exist for it; it does not perform selenium sensitisation, because Wall’s range is a range for a manufacturer and no source the course holds gives a home procedure.
The other use is the one everybody assumes and nobody has shown. Kodak describes the active ingredient of its Rapid Selenium Toner as “a sulfite salt” at less than 2 per cent, and its working solutions as containing less than half a per cent of “selenium sulfite” — a phrase with no CAS number behind it. Selenium dissolved in sulfite is, in the wider chemical literature, a selenosulfate. The temptation to close the loop is obvious.
It is not sodium selenide, and the difference is not pedantry. Wall’s 1924 toning formulas dissolve the element in sodium sulfide or fuse it with caustic soda, and what those give is selenide, selenium(−II), in a bath that also contains sulfide. That preparation is one of the reasons the selenium page is classified for historical study only. A selenosulfate is a different anion reached by a different route, and confusing them makes the historical formulas look milder than they were.
Properties
Section titled “Properties”Na₂SeSO₃, relative molecular mass 205.02, CAS 25468-09-1. PubChem’s record gives the formula as Na₂O₃SSe and holds nothing else — no melting point, no density, no physical description, no solubility. This is one of the sparsest records behind any page in the encyclopaedia.
The structure is worth one sentence because it explains the whole family. Sulfite carries three oxygens on a sulfur with a lone pair; that lone pair will take up a chalcogen atom. Take up sulfur and you have thiosulfate, which is hypo. Take up selenium and you have selenosulfate.
The label on that equation is doing real work. HSDB records that elemental selenium dissolves in potassium sulfite solution; Wall gives the sodium salt’s formula as Na₂SeSO₃. Putting the two together is the course’s own reading, offered as chemistry rather than as a transcription, and it is the only place on this page where a step is not directly quoted from a source.
Handling
Section titled “Handling”The classification is Danger, with the acute-toxicity and environmental pictograms: fatal if swallowed, toxic if inhaled, may cause an allergic skin reaction, and toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects. Each of those appears in 100 per cent of reports — of a single notification covering 38 company reports, filed under a list number rather than a substance name. There is no harmonised CLP entry and no national scheme to check it against. The course reports the percentages because they are what the record says, and reports the sample size in the same breath because a hundred per cent of one notifier is not a consensus.
HSE’s EH40 reaches the substance through the entry for selenium and compounds, except hydrogen selenide, as Se, at 0.1 mg/m³, and lists dihydrogen selenide separately at 0.02 ppm. That second figure is the one that governs behaviour, because it is what an acid could make.
Nothing here reaches a domestic drain. Kodak’s guidance for amateurs withholds sewer, treatment works and household refuse alike from used selenium toner and names a household hazardous waste facility or a licensed hauler instead; UK government guidance sends a householder to the same kind of place. Because the substance is also classified toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects, the environmental case and the regulatory case point the same way for once. Check your local regulations; they govern, and they differ.
History
Section titled “History”The compound is a footnote to one of the most consequential discoveries in emulsion chemistry. Sheppard’s finding that the sensitising power of gelatin came from traces of sulfur compounds turned an art into a control, and the search that followed — for other substances that would do the same thing more predictably — swept up the whole chalcogen family. Wall’s 1929 list is a snapshot of that search: sulfur, selenium and tellurium compounds together, all at doses of one part in a million, all with the same warning that too much brings fog rather than speed. Sulfur, with gold, won. The selenium compounds went to the toning bench instead, where they are still doing a job whose chemistry their own manufacturers decline to write down.
