Responding to a silver nitrate spill

To collect every part of a silver nitrate spill — the solid, the solution, the rinse and the things that touched it — into one container and one sealed bag, with nothing left on a surface, nothing drying in a bin and nothing in a drain.

Any escape of the solid or of a sensitiser, stock or working solution containing it: Part IV’s halide work, Part V’s makes and coating, and every printing-out sensitiser after them. It applies to a drip you noticed and to a drip you noticed three hours later as a mark.

It does not apply to a dry, coated, processed sheet, which carries silver and no free silver nitrate and is handled as paper.

You should already have run handling silver nitrate, which is what put the tray, the waste container and the goggles in the right places before this happened, and read the reagent that sets the rules.

This is a Level B procedure: chemical splash goggles, new gloves, an apron, eyewash within reach. There is no published breakthrough time for silver nitrate in the permeation guide this course read, so the glove is splash protection with a short contact time and prompt replacement rather than a timed barrier; the glove reference says so in full.

  1. Stop, set the vessel down upright, and say aloud what has spilled and at what strength.
  2. Get the organic material out of the path first: paper, card, the notebook, a cloth, a wooden board, anything cellulose. It is the fire question as well as the stain question.
  3. Goggles on, then new heavier gloves — not the pair that has been near the bottle — and the apron.
  4. Stand the silver-bearing waste container where you can reach it from where you will be working.
  5. If it is a solid, collect it dry by collecting a spilled solid: card or scoop, slowly, close to the surface, into a closed container. Do not brush it and do not wet it.
  6. If it is a solution, absorb from the edge inwards with granules or a mat, then lift the loaded absorbent straight into a bag.
  7. Take up the residue with one damp disposable wipe.
  8. Wash the surface with a small volume of water and collect that rinse into the silver-bearing container. Not the sink, and not a large volume — a large volume only makes more silver-bearing liquid to store.
  9. Seal the bag holding the absorbent, the wipes and the gloves, and label it. Nothing from this spill goes into an open bin, and nothing is left anywhere to dry.
  10. Everything liquid goes to the silver-bearing container, by routing silver-bearing waste. The route that container then takes is a local question and the disposal caveat is the page that governs it.
  11. Look at the tray, the bench lip, the floor and your shoes. Then look at the tray again after ten minutes: a splash you missed will have started to darken.
  12. Gloves off by the removal sequence, into the sealed bag, and wash your hands at length.
  13. Write it down, and invalidate any weighed mass the spill came out of.
  • No paper, card or cloth remains anywhere the spill reached, and none of it went into an open bin.
  • Every liquid from the event — the absorbed spill, the wipe rinse and the surface wash — is in the silver-bearing container, and the sink took none of it.
  • Nothing has been left to dry: no film in a dish, no damp wipe on a bench, no loaded absorbent standing open.
  • The darkening you find ten minutes later is on the tray, which is what the tray is for, and not on the bench, the floor or a sleeve.
  • Any batch the spill came out of has been recorded as invalid rather than corrected by guesswork.

Step 2, it has already soaked into paper or cloth. That material is now loaded and it is not salvageable. Into the sealed bag, wet, and do not let it dry there or anywhere else.

Step 5, you have wetted the solid. It is a solution spill of several times the volume. Continue at step 6 and expect the collected volume to surprise you.

Step 8, some of it went to the drain. Record it with your best estimate of the volume and the strength, and move the collecting container before the next session. The estimate is what makes the entry useful; the container’s position is what stops it recurring.

Step 10, the container is nearly full. Close it, date it and start another. Decanting it into an unlabelled bottle to make room converts an identified, recoverable waste into an unknown.

Step 11, a mark appears where you did not think anything landed. The spill went further than you saw. Re-do steps 7 and 8 over that area, and widen the search, because a stain is the only evidence this substance ever gives you and it gives it late.

Ammonia is anywhere near the spill or the clean-up. Stop and separate them. Ammonia added to silver nitrate solution can, on standing or drying, leave silver nitride behind, and the incompatibility matrix states what that is. Nothing from this procedure is stored with ammonia and nothing ammoniacal is used to clean it up.

Any of it reaches skin or an eye. Treat the exposure first. Rinse skin at once and at length, which is about limiting absorption rather than about the colour; irrigate an eye and get medical advice with the sheet in your hand. What spilled, in what form, at what strength, how much and where. Then the volume that went into the silver-bearing container, the bag that was sealed, and whether any of it reached a drain. Add the mass that is now unaccounted for, because a spill out of a weighed quantity means the batch you were making has no known strength, and the honest entry says so rather than carrying the number forward.
